Professional Profile

Dr Mohamed Raffa is an accomplished national and international dispute resolution professional, widely recognised for his work in complex financial, banking and commercial arbitration. He combines over three decades of practice with a strong academic background in economics and arbitration law.

He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Pittsburgh and a PhD in Arbitration Law from the University of East London. His dual training in economics and law allows him to approach disputes with a deep understanding of both financial structures and legal frameworks.

Dr Raffa has taught Economics and Banking at the University of Pittsburgh and currently lectures Arbitration and International Commercial Law at Cambridge University and the University of East London. He is also a full-time Module Leader and Lecturer of Law at CU London.

As Senior Partner at Raffa Cartoni & Obeid (RLawyers Group) – a law firm established in 1958 by Rt. Hon Judge Said Raffa, former Supreme Court Judge in Egypt – Dr Raffa leads a practice that specialises in banking and financial dispute resolution, especially inter-bank disputes and complex corporate financial cases. During the 2008 financial crisis, Raffa Ebeid’s primary mandate was the arbitration of disputes arising from the global financial downturn.

  • Co-arbitrator in a dispute between a financial lender and a technology company.
  • Emergency Arbitrator in matters involving a holding financial company of a pharmaceutical group and senior banking executives regarding breach of arbitration separability agreements.
  • Sole Arbitrator in numerous breach of commercial contract and shareholder disputes, including valuation of stock options and alleged breaches of fiduciary duties.
  • Co-arbitrator in financial broker/dealer disputes.
  • Sole Ad-Hoc Arbitrator in multiple moral hazard and breach of duty disputes in the financial services sector.
  • Sole Ad-Hoc Arbitrator in numerous cases involving breaches of financial services agreements with banks acting as both claimants and defendants.
